Thrifting is one of my favorite things to do. It is my guilty pleasure. I can recall asking my grandmother to take my to the thrift store when I was 6 or 7. I can just get lost in the rapture of other people’s old junk. And I always find the perfect diamonds in the rough. Part of the thrill of thrifting is the hunt, the search for some unknown treasure. Lately it has become trendy to shop in second hand shops, and I am a firm advocate of it. For those of you who are not that familiar or fond of thrifting I have listed a few tips to help you navigate your visits to these types of stores.

  1. Make sure you have plenty of time. I say budget about an hour or more of time. Thrift stores aren’t the most organized places so you will need plenty of time to dig.
  2. Look through EVERYTHING. The kids section, men’s, all of women’s. I found a small men’s YSL shirt in Goodwill for $5 and it’s the perfect fit for me.
  3. Check over your finds. Make sure you look for stains, tears, missing buttons, broken zippers. Some stuff is fixable, other things may not be repairable.
  4. Try things on. A lot of thrift stores won’t allow you to return once you have purchased items so be sure they all fit. Or are able to be altered to fit you.
  5. Call your local thrift stores and see if they have special discount days. The Salvation Army back home does 50% off every Wednesday, so that would always be my thrifting day.
  6. Bring hand sanitizer. Alot of the clothes are old and worn so I frequently sanitize my hands.
  7. HAVE FUN!!!!!

Do you guys thrift? If so, what are some tips or tricks you have?
