What is purpose? How do you know if you’ve found yours? I don’t have concrete answers to either of those things (lol). For me, purpose is the reason why you exist. I avidly believe that we can have more than one purpose… but everyone has at least one. I also believe that your innate gifts work directly with or for your purpose.
Until about 3 years ago I thought my purpose was to be a stylist. Fashion was all I knew and could think about. I studied it. I submerged my entire life into this industry… only to be left feeling unfulfilled. So, I started blogging.
My first love is writing. I have been a writer since I knew how to do so. I have stacks upon stacks of journals, some of which are 20 years old. Writing is where I feel most free and most like self. Needless to say the mix of my style and writing – blogging – seemed like the perfect career. I started this journey as a style blogger. I would post outfit pictures, and give brief descriptions of what I was wearing and why. It was mundane and superficial – I was unfulfilled yet again.
And then it happened, I spoke on my first panel and a girl approached me telling me that I inspired her. I was in the midst of an unhealthy relationship, poor as dirt, and suicidal. But, that compliment was the sweetest drug I had ever tasted. Knowing that I touched someone. That my story created a spark, or ignited a dormant fire inside of someone – that was the type of fuel I needed. So I stopped trying to fit into the pretentious world of fashion blogging and started being real. Real with myself, and real with my audience about who I am, where I’ve been, and where I would like to go. It wasn’t an easy transition, but it was necessary, and my career & character are both better off.
Your purpose will find you, but it is your job to pay attention to the signs and follow them. I created an audience based off of my passion, but I am able to touch them because of my purpose. Your purpose and passion may be one in the same, but if not.. you are the bridge to connect the two. Use your gifts and they will reward you. Make your life full and you will find happiness. Do not be afraid to carve out a space that is for you… you never know who you may be paving the way for. You never know what doors of your life you may be unlocking if you just devote a little energy to the things that you are naturally attracted to. I may only have two hands, but I can change the world with them. So can you.
